All businesses are required to keep proper bookkeeping, payroll and vat records. HMRC regularly do checks and inspections to ensure this is the case and if not fine businesses heavily. Indeed HMRC began a programme of Business Record Checks in early 2011 to review the adequacy and accuracy of business records within the SME sector.
The maximum penalty for failure to maintain proper business records is £3000.Although this programme has recently been suspended it is most certainly going to return at some point.
Most businesses find this accounting record keeping a real chore which prevents them from spending time on what they set out in business to do and indeed in many cases they could earn more money per hour than it would cost them if they outsourced their bookkeeping, payroll and VAT return processing. In addition most businesses do not produce up-to-date Management Accounts regularly to review the performance of their business.
The Chamber offers bookkeeping; management accounting, payroll and VAT return service to businesses at a reasonable price from our premises in Livingston. The accounting records are processed from original records on Sage Accounting software to produce records acceptable to HMRC along with Management accounting information that is easily understood and suits the needs of SME owners.
Additional professional services are also available such as company formation, training etc
