Livingston, September 2013: A Business Technologist from the Livingston office of international IT services company, Atos raised over £1,800 by donning a banana suit and walking eight miles in aid of a good cause close to her heart.
Sarah McKean, Team Leader at Atos, decided to take part in the ‘Miles for Macmillan’ walk, which took place in Edinburgh on 1 September, to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Sarah completed the fundraising as a thank you to the charity that helped her mother when she was diagnosed with bowel cancer two years ago. Macmillan Cancer support is also one of Atos’ corporate sponsored charities.
Sarah’s initial target of £200 was surpassed on her first day of fundraising when she managed to reach £500, so she decided to push the target a little higher.
She said: “I never thought I would manage to raise more than the £200 I had initially aimed for but when I managed to more than double it on my first day of launching my fundraising page it made me wonder how much I could raise if I said I’d complete the walk in a banana suit.”
A number of Sarah’s family, friends and colleagues helped her to achieve her impressive donation total of £1,635, £200 of which was provided by Atos.
“I had such a huge amount of support from everyone at Atos – everyone was so generous with their donations and very encouraging and supportive.”
“Near the beginning of the race I suffered a sprained ankle - all the support from everyone who donated and wished me well spurred me on through the pain to help me cross the finish line as a limping banana!”
Sarah’s mother, whose cancer is now in remission, was at the start line to help cheer her on her way.
“My mum really appreciated me taking part in the event and thought it was a great touch that I decided to complete the walk dressed as a banana – she had a good laugh at that.”
Gavin Thomson, Atos’ Senior Vice President in Scotland, said: “We’d like to congratulate Sarah for her impressive fundraising efforts and her willingness to take part in the ‘Miles for Macmillan’ event with such good humor.
“This demonstrates how dedicated all our staff are to supporting important charities that make a difference to so many people.”
Macmillan’s Area fundraising manager, Susan Selkirk, said: “Well done to Sarah for raising such a huge amount for Macmillan through her Miles for Macmillan Challenge.
“Macmillan believes that no one should face cancer alone and we rely on donations like this to ensure that nobody does. We simply couldn’t fund our much needed services to support people affected by cancer without this support
Atos in Scotland also supports other corporate charities – Maggies, Sick Kids Friends Foundation and the Yorkhill Children’s Foundation.
