West Lothian Chamber of Commerce and Mitsubishi Electric are working in partnership to bring closer together industry and schools with the aim of supporting young people in developing skills beneficial to their future development.
The competition has been piloted this year at Armadale Academy with a view to rolling it out to all West Lothian secondary schools in 2015. The challenge for the students was to design an innovative use for a heat pump.
The “Pump it Up” Challenge encourages budding engineers from Armadale Academy to develop a better understanding of the science and technology involved in “green” energy.
Run over three mornings with 160 children from S3 taking part, each session involved approximately 50 pupils who were split in to groups to research and design a use for a heat pump then presented their idea to the judges.
A winning group from each session will visit Mitsubishi Electric in Livingston for a factory tour before presenting their ideas to the senior management. The final winners of the challenge will be presented with their prizes at Armadale Academy by the President of Mitsubishi Electric.
